"Island of the Dead" (German: "Die Toteninsel") is a painting by Swiss Symbolist artist Arnold Böcklin. The work exists in five different versions, created between 1880 and 1886. The painting depicts a desolate, rocky islet, dominated by cypress trees, which are traditionally associated with cemeteries and mourning. A small rowboat is approaching the island, carrying a standing figure clad in white and a coffin. The overall mood of the painting is somber and mysterious, evoking themes of death and the afterlife.

The first version of "Island of the Dead" was commissioned by Alexander Günther, an art dealer in Basel, in 1880. Böcklin completed this version in May of the same year. The painting was so well received that Böcklin created a second version for Marie Berna, the widow of financier Dr. Georg Berna. This second version, completed in 1880, is the most famous and is housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The other three versions are located in the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, and a private collection.

Böcklin's inspiration for the painting is believed to have come from the English Cemetery in Florence, where he lived for several years. The cemetery, with its dense cypress trees and tombs, left a lasting impression on him. Additionally, the motif of a solitary island may have been influenced by the Isola di San Michele, the cemetery island in the Venetian Lagoon.

The painting's enigmatic nature has led to various interpretations and has inspired numerous artists, writers, and composers. The German composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, for instance, was inspired by "Island of the Dead" to create a symphonic poem of the same name in 1909. The painting has also appeared in various forms of popular culture, including literature and film.

Böcklin's "Island of the Dead" is considered a masterpiece of Symbolist art. The painting's haunting atmosphere and evocative imagery have made it one of the most iconic works of the late 19th century. Its influence can be seen in the works of later artists and continues to captivate audiences with its mysterious and melancholic beauty.
