Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist, known for his innovative and dramatic woodblock prints. One of his notable works is "Gojo Bridge Moon" (五条橋月), which is part of his celebrated series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon (Tsuki hyakushi, 月百姿). This series, created between 1885 and 1892, consists of 100 woodblock prints, each inspired by historical, literary, or legendary themes associated with the moon.

"Gojo Bridge Moon" depicts a famous scene from Japanese folklore involving the legendary warrior monk Benkei and the young hero Minamoto no Yoshitsune. According to the tale, Benkei, a towering and formidable figure, stationed himself on Kyoto's Gojo Bridge, challenging and defeating every swordsman who crossed his path in an effort to collect 1,000 swords. However, his streak came to an end when he encountered Yoshitsune, a skilled and agile warrior of small stature. Despite Benkei's strength, Yoshitsune's superior technique and speed allowed him to defeat the monk. Following this encounter, Benkei became Yoshitsune's loyal retainer, and their partnership became a celebrated story in Japanese history and literature.

In Yoshitoshi's print, the moon plays a central role in setting the atmosphere of the scene. The composition captures the dramatic moment on the bridge, with the moonlight illuminating the figures and emphasizing the tension between the two characters. Yoshitoshi's use of intricate details, dynamic poses, and expressive faces brings the legendary duel to life. The print exemplifies his mastery of storytelling through visual art, as well as his ability to blend traditional ukiyo-e techniques with a more modern and emotive style.

"Gojo Bridge Moon" reflects Yoshitoshi's interest in themes of heroism, loyalty, and the supernatural, as well as his fascination with the moon as a symbol of beauty, mystery, and inspiration. The series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon is considered one of Yoshitoshi's greatest achievements and a significant contribution to the ukiyo-e tradition during its final years in the late 19th century.

This artwork, like many in the series, showcases Yoshitoshi's ability to draw from Japan's rich cultural heritage while also appealing to contemporary audiences of his time. Today, "Gojo Bridge Moon" remains a celebrated example of Yoshitoshi's artistic legacy and continues to be admired for its historical and aesthetic significance.
